Timothy L. Smith, MD, MPH, FACS is currently Professor and Director of the Oregon Sinus Center, Chief of Rhinology and Sinus-Skull Base Surgery, and Director of Clinical Research in the Department of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery at Oregon Health & Science University in Portland, Oregon. Dr. Smith graduated from the University of Cincinnati with a B.S. in biology prior to completing his M.D. degree at the same University. He completed his residency at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill and Fellowship in Rhinology and Sinus Surgery at the Medical College of Wisconsin. He earned his Master of Public Health degree in Health Policy, Finance and Administration at the University of North Carolina School of Public Health.
A recognized expert in nasal/sinus/skull base disorders, his clinical practice is focused on nasal, sinus, and skull base disease and surgery including management of tumors of the sinuses and skull base and complex sinus disease. He is actively involved in research and has held several research grants including serving as the Principal Investigator of the first multi-institutional, multi-disciplinary study of outcomes of sinus surgery funded by the National Institutes of Health in the United States. Dr. Smith has given over 300 lectures nationally and internationally, has been the course director for many national/international Continuing Medical Education Programs, and serves as director of the Fellowship in Rhinology and Sinus/Skull Base Surgery at Oregon Health & Science University.
Dr. Smith is board certified in Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery and is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, Triological Society and the American Rhinologic Society, in addition to membership in several other specialty societies. Dr. Smith has published over 250 peer-reviewed articles, invited articles, book chapters, and other scientific publications. He has received four teaching awards from the residents of two departments of otolaryngology and has been honored with the Distinguished Service Award from the American Academy of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery and the Dr. Maurice Cottle Honor Award for distinguished research from the American Rhinologic Society. In addition, he is the first American Rhinologist/Sinus Surgeon to be elected to the Collegium Oto-Rhino-Laryngologicum Amicitiae Sacrum, a distinguished international society of only 50 US members.
Dr. Smith is a Past President of the American Rhinologic Society, the largest subspecialty organization of practicing nasal/sinus surgeons in the USA, and was elected to the Board of Directors for the American Academy of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery. He has served as an Associate Editor of the International Forum of Allergy & Rhinology and JAMA Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery and has served on the editorial boards of several other journals.
